What is NIC EIC?
The NIC EIC (National Inspection Council for Electrical Installation Contracting) has been assessing the technical competence of electrical contractors for over 50 years. Their aim is to protect anyone who uses electricity from unsafe electrical installations in their homes, places of work and leisure.
NIC EIC maintains a register of electrical contractors they have independently assessed as complying with the relevant standards, codes of practice and scheme rules. Enrolment is entirely voluntary — which is precisely why it carries weight. Only contractors who are genuinely competent and conscientious apply to join.
How Contractors Are Assessed
Contractor assessment by NIC EIC covers a representative sample of actual completed work, the contractor's premises, their documentation, their equipment, and the technical competence of their key supervisory staff. Once registered, contractors are re-assessed on a regular basis to ensure continued compliance. There is no "set and forget" — the standard must be maintained continuously.
Approximately 90% of Local Authorities in the UK restrict certain electrical work to NIC EIC Approved Contractors on safety grounds. When you use AEC Services, you're using a contractor that meets this bar.
Compliance with Building Regulations (Part P)
Certain types of domestic electrical work — including consumer unit replacements, new circuits, and most work in kitchens, bathrooms and outdoors — are notifiable under Part P of the Building Regulations. This means they must either be carried out by a registered electrician or inspected and certified by Local Authority Building Control (which involves additional cost and delay).
As a NIC EIC Approved Contractor, AEC Services can self-certify notifiable work without any involvement from the Local Authority. We handle the Part P notification on your behalf, at no additional cost. You simply get the certificate — no chasing councils, no extra fees.
Insurance-Backed Warranty
The NIC EIC Insurance-Backed Warranty covers all notifiable domestic work carried out by NIC EIC Domestic Installers. The warranty provides up to £25,000 per installation and is valid for 6 years from the date of completion.
The purpose of this warranty is to protect you in the unlikely event that the contractor is no longer trading and cannot carry out any necessary remedial work. Your investment in electrical safety is protected even beyond the life of the contractor — which is something no unregistered electrician can offer.
Independent Complaints Procedure
NIC EIC operates an independent complaints procedure covering the technical standards of registered contractors. If the electrical work of a registered contractor is found to be below the accepted technical standard, NIC EIC requires the contractor to correct the work at no additional cost to you.
If the contractor fails to do so, NIC EIC's Guarantee of Standards Scheme ensures the remedial work will be carried out by another NIC EIC registered contractor, also at no cost to you. This two-layer protection is unique to NIC EIC registered work.
AEC Services' NIC EIC Status
AEC Services (Midlands) Ltd holds both NIC EIC Approved Contractor status (for commercial and larger domestic work) and NIC EIC Domestic Installer status (for all notifiable domestic work). This dual registration means we can handle the full range of domestic and commercial electrical work to the highest certified standard.
You can verify our registration directly on the NIC EIC website at any time.
